# Directions:
01 - In a bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
02 - Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined.
03 - Gradually mix in the flour and salt just until the dough forms.
04 - Shape the dough into a disk, wrap it in cling film, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
05 - Preheat oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
06 - On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to a thickness of 1/5 inch.
07 - Use heart and star-shaped cookie cutters to cut the dough, making a small hole near the top of each for threading ribbons later.
08 - Place the shapes on the baking sheet and bake for 10 to 12 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
09 - Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.
10 - Combine powdered sugar with lemon juice or water to form a smooth glaze; add food coloring if desired.
11 - Spread the icing on cooled cookies and allow it to set fully.
